What People Are Saying About Us

Free Battery Diagnostics Check

We offer a ‘free’ diagnostics check of your existing battery and if it only needs charging we will give you honest advice. We do offer a battery fitting service at a nominal cost. Power, performance and reliability are the most important factors for determining the quality of a car battery – and VARTA is the benchmark for battery quality in the automotive industry. Our philosophy is to never compromise on quality, and this mantra has earned us the number one position as the first choice supplier to the vehicle manufacturers.

The VARTA battery package packs a powerful punch. Our adherence to the highest quality standards mean there is no room for compromise, and our technological expertise leads to continual innovation and improvement. This is why we can, again and again, offer the market products which guarantee improved power and reliability, products that further extend our lead over the competition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Please find below a selection of FAQs. If you have any additional questions please do not hesitate to get in touch.

  • Why choose a Varta battery?

With accessories like satellite navigation systems, DVD’s and telephone points as standard or an optional extra in the majority of new cars, the requirement for reliable and powerful energy supply is greater than ever before. The versatile Varta range of automotive batteries will power modern car accessories and typically deliver up to 40,000 engine starts. They have far superior starting power and reliability to outperform the original battery fitted to the vehicle.

The UK market is flooded with cheaper, low performance and unreliable batteries. It’s only after a short period of time after fitment of these inferior products do car owners realise the demands their vehicle has on the battery power source. It comes as no surprise that the power and performance packed within a Varta battery’s sealed casing are very often forgotten once fitted. Due to a combination of supreme reliability and 100% maintenance free, the Varta water consumption is minimal resulting in no servicing throughout its life. The range exceeds the high quality and performance demands of vehicle manufacturers and compared with conventional batteries, it also has a far greater service life.

Which battery is right for you?

VartaThat depends on what you need the battery to do. A modern high-tech car which has dozens of electrical consumers fitted has a higher electrical consumption. An older, smaller car has less power requirement. Our product line-up caters for every need, and whether it’s the ULTRA dynamic battery or one of the batteries from our dynamic TRIO range, you will find VARTA delivers tailor made power for every car. When you choose VARTA, you are opting for guaranteed starting, reliable power to all your electrical consumers, long life and the peace of mind that your battery will not let you down. • How can I start the car when the battery is flat?

    Jump StartJump Start

Two things are necessary – a second car and two jump leads for the positive and negative terminals. An electrical connection via jump leads from an SLI battery being charged by the running motor to the SLI battery of the car that won’t start is normally the simplest solution. The start procedure is to be carried out in seven steps.

You need to follow these steps:

    • Only use batteries with the same rated voltage.
    • Switch off both engines and all electrics (except the donor vehicle’s hazard warning lights).
    • First, connect the red jump lead to the positive terminal of the flat battery, and then attach the clip on the other end of the lead to the donor battery.
    • Then connect the black cable to the negative terminal on the donor vehicle before attaching the free end of the cable to a metal part away from the battery on the vehicle with the flat battery. The best area may be the engine block (see vehicle manufacturer’s instructions).
    • Make sure that the cables do not come into the range of the exhaust or the drive belt.
    • Start the engine of the donor vehicle, and then start the engine of the vehicle with a flat battery (max. 15 seconds) and let it run.
    • Remove the cables in the reverse order.

Only use batteries with the same rated voltage. Note: please refer to the operating manual for your vehicle!

  • Terminals

    Terminals

The battery is connected to other assemblies by its terminals. These are mostly cone-shaped terminals conforming to the EN standard. The positive terminal is slightly thicker than the negative terminal so that the connections cannot be confused. Flat terminals (known as Ford terminals) are used less often. They have a stud hole so that a battery lug can be connected.

    Ampere hours

[Ah] Product of the current strength (measured in amperes) and the duration (in hours) of the current. The quantity of electricity (capacity) of a battery or cell is usually expressed in ampere-hours. Ah is the abbreviation.

Ampere [A] Basic unit of electrical current strength.

    Capacity

The available quantity of electricity of a battery or cell measured in ampere-hours. The capacity is dependent on the battery temperature and the discharging current. It is therefore important to state not just the capacity, but also the discharging current and temperature (e.g. cold-start capacity in seconds with cold-test current and -18°C).

    Cell

The smallest unit of a battery stores electrical energy and forms the fundamental cornerstone of a battery if it is placed into a case and equipped with electrical connectors.

The capacity of a cell is determined by its size. The cell voltage, however, depends on the electrochemical system of the element Cold Cranking. Cold cranking is the discharge current given by the manufacturer. It is emitted by a battery at a temperature of -18°C with a minimum voltage of Ui=7,5 volt for a period of 10 seconds, according to the EN specifications.

    Maintenance-free gel battery

With fixed electrolyte lead acid battery in which the electrolyte is held in place in a gel or micro glass mat (AGM). The battery is sealed and equipped with valves. It is highly stable and exhibits good cycling characteristics. Overcharging beyond the fully loaded stage can result in battery damage (loss of electrolyte).

    Volt

Unit of measurement for electrical voltage. Abbreviation V. Named after the Italian physicist and doctor Count Alessandro Volta (1745 – 1827).

  • Operating instructions

The operating instructions for any battery are extremely important. Although the Varta operating instructions vary according to the battery type and model, there are similarities in the basic construction.

Fitting instructions, storage and transport of batteries:

    • Batteries are filled with acid so take caution during installation and removal.
    • They should be stored and transported upright so they do not tip over and cause acid to spill out.
    • Store in a cool and dry place.
    • Leave the protective cap (if present) on the positive terminal.
    • Practice FIFO (first in, first out) storage.
    • Remove the protective cap from the positive terminal only when ready to connect to the vehicle and put it on the terminal of the battery which you have removed so as to avoid short-circuits and sparking.
    • Switch off the engine and all other electrical consumers.
    • Avoid short-circuits through tools for example.
    • Disconnect the negative terminal first when removing the battery.
    • Remove foreign objects from the battery installation area and secure the battery firmly after putting it in place.
    • Clean the terminals and connectors and lightly grease.
    • When installing the battery, connect the positive terminal first and make sure the connectors are firmly attached.
    • Keep the battery clean and dry.
    • Only wipe the battery with a damp, anti-static cloth otherwise you risk causing an explosion.
    • Do not open the battery.
    • Charge the battery if the starting power is insufficient.
